Sureway Employment & Training are delighted to announce that six of our local teams have once again been awarded the highest grade in the latest Australian Government’s jobactive star rating publication.

Published by the Department of Jobs and Small Business on a quarterly basis, the star rating system measures the success of employment providers in assisting their clients into work. The scale also provides transparency for job seekers and employers alike to be able to select the best provider for their needs.

Sureway’s NSW sites Tumut, Broken Hill and Griffith all achieved the top rating, along with Echuca in VIC, and Clare and Nuriootpa lead the way for SA.

Sureway’s Tumut and Broken Hill offices we the only employment services provider in their respective areas to earn the top score, with Tumut Area Manager Tammy Stear saying that the success was a great win for the town.

“We are very excited to be recognised as the only 5-star service provider in the Tumut area.” Ms Stear said.

“It is a real asset for local employers and job seekers to know that they can access a top-rated service right here in town, and that they can rely on us to deliver quality outcomes long-term.” She said.

The Griffith office was first awarded 5-star status in June 2016 and has held the prestige position ever since, with Echuca not far behind reaching the pinnacle for the first time in September 2016. Broken Hill is Sureway latest office to join the 5-star elite, with the rating period from June to August 2018 seeing the location leap from 3 stars to 5 stars.

“We have been delivering a quality service for some time now, and this jump shows that word is getting out.” Mr Peduto said.

“We have assisted businesses in Broken Hill to apply for thousands of dollars in Australian Government incentives in the past quarter alone.” He said.

But Mr Peduto said that the success was not without help from the community.

“A big thank you must go to our partner businesses who trust us with their recruitment processes.” Mr Peduto said.

“Also to our many wonderful clients who we have been able to assist into meaningful employment.”

All six offices now rank in the top 21% of jobactive locations across the country.

Brendan’s story

Working sporadic hours in the hospitality industry, Brendan Ridges joined Sureway Echuca to further his career prospects.

The Echuca team could immediately tell that Brendan was very employable and would suit a variety of roles. During one appointment, Brendan expressed an interest in a career in Administration. He had completed a Certificate III in Business Administration some years prior but had never been able to land a job to put the skills he had learned into practice.

Echuca Recruitment Consultant Debbie had formed a solid relationship with the Murray River Council, and promptly sent Brendan’s resume over to her contact. The very next day, a meet and greet was organised between Brendan and the Council and he was employed on the spot for a trial period.

Two months on and Brendan is prospering in his full-time role, and the Echuca team are beaming with pride.

Brendan got in touch with Debbie and the team and couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

I would like to thank Debbie and the team at Sureway Echuca for helping me land an amazing job at Murray River Council.” Brendan said.

As soon as I mentioned that I was interested in utilising my skills to do an admin role they did not hesitate to find a way to point me in the right direction.

I can’t thank the team at Sureway enough because I am working full-time hours and I love my job.

Congratulations to Brendan for pursuing his dream career.

During the week of 26 – 30 November 2018, Sureway Employment & Training are proud to be be taking part in AccessAbility Day – a new Australian Government initiative developed to connect job seekers with disability and employers.

There are 2.2 million Australians living with disability who are of working age, but Australians with disability are under-represented in the workforce. In fact, the employment rate for people with disability is almost half compared to those without disability.

What is AccessAbility Day?
AccessAbility Day is a voluntary, obligation free day for employers to have an opportunity to see the potential job seekers with disability can bring to the workplace and learn about available Government support. It is also a great opportunity for job seekers with disability to experience a workplace or role that aligns with their career interests.

AccessAbility Day is a job shadowing opportunity for the participant to try a day in a workplace and see what that workplace has to offer and for the employer to learn more about working with job seekers with disability.

Participants and employers can be involved in AccessAbility Day on any one day of this week at a time mutually suitable to both parties. Job seekers must be registered with DES to be eligible to participate in AccessAbility Day.

What are the benefits of providing an opportunity to someone with a disability?
Employing a person with a disability offers endless benefits for your company, such as high retention rate, low absenteeism, and increase in workplace morale. Read more about the benefits and support here.

How can I get involved?
Get in touch with your local Sureway team who will be able to connect you with suitable candidates for your opportunity.

Parkes business people are invited to a free business breakfast this Tuesday to learn how to streamline their recruiting processes.

Employment provider Sureway Employment & Training are encouraging business owners and hiring managers to stop wasting time and money on hiring, and instead pop in for a no obligation chat about how they can utilise Sureway’s free recruitment services.

Having assisted people in the Parkes Shire Communities to find work for over 15 years, Sureway understand the local market and the time pressures that come with running a successful business, and are committed to providing work-ready candidates to complement your team.

Delivering the services under the Australian Governments jobactive and Disability Employment Services (DES) contracts means that employers can access a wide range of programs and financial incentives when they employ an eligible candidate.

Area Manager David Powter encouraged all employers to provide an opportunity if they have the means.

“We have a wide range of clients of all ages, skill levels and industry backgrounds,” he said. “They’re just waiting for the right business to give them a go.”

“If an employer is having trouble finding skilled candidates we can also discuss training opportunities, which come at no cost to the employer.” Mr Powter said.

“Our goal is to support our clients into local jobs which in turn enables the Parkes community to grow stronger and move forward.” Mr Powter said.

The event will be held on Tuesday 30 October at the Sureway Parkes office, 22 Church Street from 7am to 8am. RSVPs would be greatly appreciated to parkesstaff@sureway.com.au

MEDIA RELEASE

Rio Paralympic T42 Gold Medallist sprinter Scott Reardon wants to encourage Wollongong employers to see abilities, not disabilities.

In a free talk in Wollongong on Thursday, Scott will tell his personal story of having his leg amputated at the age of 12 in a farming accident at his home in country NSW. In addition to the
physical setbacks, the talented sportsman experienced mental health challenges.

“When I lost the lower half of my leg, my visions of representing Australia seemed to be destroyed in the blink of an eye. I had to make a choice, hide from the world or take it as a challenge and attack it head on.”

Now with two water skiing world championships under his belt, the Paralympic medal plus a Medal of the Order of Australia, Scott is also the Disability Employment Services Ambassador for
Sureway Employment and Training.

Scott says Australians with a disability are around twice as likely to be unemployed as those without a disability, and he hopes his story will show employers what is possible when you give an
opportunity to someone with a disability.

“Employing someone with a disability has a large flow-on effect, and has the power to make communities better as a whole,” Scott said. “It gives someone with a disability meaning and
purpose in life, and an opportunity that will change the lives of families and those around them.”

Scott is on a mission to help as many people as possible find meaningful employment, and hopes his story will encourage people with disabilities to seek out opportunities.

“I want to show job-seekers how to look for an opportunity and then take it with both hands. Whatever role you’re in, to make a difference is so fulfilling.”

“Every human deserves a chance, and I hope I can shine the light on the huge abilities that people with disabilities have. The stigma that surrounds someone with a disability is a limitation, but once it’s overcome, the possibilities are endless.”

Scott will give a free talk for people with disabilities, their carers, potential employers and the general public, at Novotel Wollongong Northbeach, Thursday 11 October 12-2pm. Phone 1300 SUREWAY for information.

Adam Haynes couldn’t get ahead in life. This is his story.

When Sureway Consultant Susie met Adam, she could tell that he had drive but his lack of work experience was holding him back in the small community of Stawell, VIC.

After completing some ground work with Adam, Susie connected him with Aaron at Suggy’s Automotive & Trailer Hire who was keen to provide an opportunity and pass on skills to a young person.

Adam jumped at the chance to undertake a Youth Jobs PaTH Internship, which allowed him the opportunity to not only show his skills to the employer, but gave him the chance to find out if the industry was really for him.

And it was! Adam has been with the business now for over 6 months after completing a PaTH Internship and is starting an Automotive Apprenticeship.

Having been in business for just over 12 months when they employed Adam, the employer said that expansion and employing locals was always the goal, and that the financial assistance provided by Sureway and jobactive meant they could achieve that goal sooner. With an increased workforce, Suggy’s has moved to a bigger shed at a more central location and is expanding their range of services.

An all-round success story, Aaron is also helping Adam gain and pass his L’s.

Well done to Aaron, Adam and the whole Suggy’s team!

Kyriae was a client with Sureway Disability Employment Services (DES) in Adelaide SA. This is her story.

When Kyriae came to Sureway DES in 2016 she suffered low moods, high anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Having left school after completing year 10, Kyriae had held only one job as a Chemist Assistant for 2 months in Adelaide SA.
With a traumatic court case behind her, Kyriae emerged as a young, enthusiastic job seeker, determined to work in the health sector.

With limited work experience and referees, Kyriae decided to volunteer at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in September 2016. Twelve months later, the time and passion she invested into her work was rewarded with a volunteering award.

With this boost in confidence Kyriae created an action plan with her Employment Advisor and soon entered the Resume and Application Writing (RAW) Pilot Program in October 2017. The program focused on creating a resume targeted at customer service roles in the health sector.

Between her volunteering hours and job applications Kyriae was kept busy. She also started an initiative called the ‘Green Light Project’ to educate young people about sexual consent and sexual assault in local high schools.

In November 2017, SA Health called for applications and Kyriae jumped at the opportunity. In early February 2018 she secured a contract position as an ASO2 Customer Service Officer at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. As a result of her volunteering she was also offered a paid monthly position with Yarrow Place as a Consumer Representative.

There was a setback in April when funding for her position with the Royal Adelaide Hospital was cut. At the same time Kyriae was advised that her application to study nursing was rejected… but she didn’t give up!

With the support of her Employment Advisors, she stayed focused and was reminded that her skills and employment history were still relevant to the industry. After 4 weeks of interviews Kyriae gained not one but two positions within the Women’s and Children’s Health Network.

She now works as a Consumer Representative in the Youth and Women’s Safety Wellbeing Division, and an Administration Officer with Child and Family Health Services.

Kyriae is also maintaining two voluntary positions with the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Green Light Project.

The Sureway team has celebrated with Kyriae at every milestone and will continue to be there to support her growth, confidence and success.

A group of 11 young job seekers have recently graduated from Youth Jobs PaTH Employability Skills Training (EST), with the trainer Peter Mullen saying that it was the most employment-focused group he has had in all his years of training.

Mr Mullen, Trainer & Assessor for ARC Group delivered the 12-day course in Traralgon VIC during August in which participants developed skills in advanced job searching techniques, career development, industry awareness, and more.

Youth Jobs PaTH EST is an Australian Government initiative designed to help young job seekers become job ready through pre-employment training. Mr Mullen said that delivering training to unemployed youth cohorts can often present a great variety of skill levels, however the group came open and ready to learn.

“In almost 11 years of delivering training to job seekers I have not had a complete group like this that was as employment focused,”

“The learners where very pro-active in what they expected and worked so very well towards getting the best out of our 12 days together.” Mr Mullen said.

Participants in this course completed a number of group tasks to build their communication skills and confidence, including the cup maze (as shown in the photos) where teams of two must navigate each other backwards and forwards using only hand signals. Job seekers were also treated to a visit from a real employer to assist them to develop an understanding of employer expectations.

“A lot of sharing was done by them when we did group activities, and they responded exceedingly well to an employer brief – one job seeker was asked to leave a resume!”

Participants also took to some mystery shopping as an exercise to learn more about the retail environment.

Mr Mullen said that engagement among the group was high, and it was excellent to see that the participants not only walked away with new skills but also new friendships.

“It is always great to see when diverse groups build strong trust and friendships during training and that was the case with this group of learners.”

“It became common for them to hang out after training for coffee.”

The group decided to have a ‘Onsie’ Day with everyone donating a gold coin to the Salvos.

Mr Mullen said that he was particularly impressed with the drive of one job seeker who called him recently to go through some interview strategies for an imminent employment interview.

“It was really pleasing to take a call from him later that day to share how he had gotten on, and again later that day when he was offered and accepted employment.”

“Without doubt the best group of learners with an excellent focus of their employment.”

“As a trainer it was a real privilege to be allowed to help these guys on their employment journey.”

8 out of the 11 participants have now found either full-time or part-time employment.
