Community Hub Wilcannia September 2010

In Wilcannia, Sureway has organised a Community Hub which operates from the Sureway office at 30 Reid Street.

Sureway’s Area Manager Dean Clarke approached Lifeline Broken Hill to partner with Sureway to run a charity shop for two days per week for the community. Dean always had a vision to set up a community hub in Wilcannia as he witnessed the residents of Wilcannia travelling to Broken Hill to purchase various items because of the limited services. The operation is run by volunteers including Ms Hazel (daughter of the Shire Manager) and a number of Sureway job seekers, one of whom is undertaking a Cert III in Retail through TAFE and getting her work experience at the shop. The shop has been operating every Tuesday and Friday for the past 12 weeks. Takings continue to flow in, which Lifeline distribute within the Wilcannia community. The shop has been stocked with the assistance of Lifeline Broken Hill and the Sureway staff who have generously donated their old clothes, crockery and wares. Given the fact that employment opportunities are extremely limited in Wilcannia, job seekers now have the opportunity to pick up valuable skills working in the charity shop.
